Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development
Entrepreneurship as a means to support local sustainable development while giving students “real world” service opportunities in development initiatives. As a first launch, coconut oil production is being explored. Steps taken so far include:
•A research facility has been leased in Honduras, Dominican Republic.

•Local methods of coconut oil production have been observed and assessed.
•Local managers have explored possible sources for equipment for coconut oil production.
•Discussions with marketers, export/import facilities, etc.
•Dr. Geoffroy de LaForcade of Norfolk State University traveled to the Dominican Republic in June 2014 to meet with agricultural officials and a lawyer to determine local resources for the project.

Sponsorship of Local Schools
As recommended by USAID-DR’s Sustainable Tourism Clusters, developed relations with two local public schools in impoverished areas near Samana. Developing these relationships are important in offering study-abroad students service learning opportunities with local students and their families.
Continued networking for collaborations with universities and colleges in the United States, Dominican Republic, Haiti and The Bahamas.

Board Chair Frank Minaya and Dr. Geoffroy de Laforcade of Norfolk State University met with Dr. Jean-Marie Théodat, President of the Board of Management of the new State University of Haiti Roi Henri Christophe campus, in Limonade, Haiti, to establish the groundwork for future collaborations.
